If you’re feeling down, use the methods below to get right back up and feel happy and positive again.

Method #1 – Talk to Yourself

This is a very simple and effective method, if you perform it constantly and involve your emotions. What you need to do is to talk positive things to yourself out loud several times a day. Unfortunately, many people who want to know how to become happy and positive learn about this method, but think it is silly. As a result, they don’t do it at all, or don’t do it in the right way, and so this method doesn’t work for them. So let’s describe now how to use this method properly.

Write down positive affirmations about yourself, such as “I am happy, I look good, people love me”, and so on. Make sure your affirmations encompass all areas of your life (especially those you have issues with), and that you write those positive affirmations down even if you don’t currently believe in them, or they do not represent the current situation. Remember that your subconscious mind will “believe” anything it keeps on hearing, as long as you repeat it constantly.

You should read the positive affirmations out loud to yourself at least twice a day – after you wake up and before you go to sleep. It’s best, though, if you keep on reading them throughout the day, especially when you feel that negative thoughts are creeping in. Do this for at least 30 days, but it’s a good habit to have for the rest of your life, to make sure you stay happy and positive.

However, it’s not enough to just read the affirmations out loud. Many people simply read the affirmations and don’t feel anything changing. This is because you need to involve your emotion in the reading, in order for your subconscious mind to start accepting it as truth. You need to feel what you’re reading if you want to eventually feel happy and positive all the time. But how do we do that when we don’t even believe some of the things that we’ve written down?

The idea is to either think of a point in the past when you felt like the affirmation you’re currently reading, or imagine yourself in the future in a situation where the affirmation you are reading comes true. Get in touch with the feelings you have when you imagine these situations. For example, if you’re saying “I’m happy” but don’t feel happy, remind yourself of a truly happy situation from your past and how you felt there. If you say “I’m wealthy” but you never really had any substantial amount of money, imagine yourself have a lot of money and how it would feel like. The key point is to feel.

Keep in mind that your mind constantly “talks” to your subconscious during the day, and what it tells it, are things you already believe in. In our case – negative things. You must fight fiercely to combat that, by countering it with constant positive affirmations. If you do it frequently, your mind will start helping you and participating in this process even when you don’t talk to yourself out loud.

Method #2 – Use Your Support System

At times when you’re in a low mood, it’s important to use your support system – your friends and family. It’s important to talk about what you feel and what you’re experiencing, and not hold it all inside. Furthermore, it’s always good to meet people and enjoy activities that will distract your mind from the difficulties that you face, and make you feel better, even if only temporarily. These short moments eventually build up.

However, if you want to feel happy and positive, you can’t just hang out with anyone. You want to hang out with people who are cheerful and happy, and won’t add to your feeling of negativity and depression. The last thing you need to hear is that “your situation is bad” and that “life is horrible”. Hang out with people who have good energy and can lift you up.

If you don’t have such people in your life, first of all, you need to make a mental note to change the people you associate with on a regular basis. But other than that, you can look for new people to communicate with online, or in places around you (register to a fun workshop or class, for example).

Finally, you can always go see a professional, if you feel that your situation is very severe, or if you can’t find any support system at all.

Method #3 – Be Grateful

When we are in a low and depressed mood, we tend to think about all the bad things that we’ve been receiving, and don’t take a moment to appreciate all the good things that we’re getting and have gotten over the years. In fact, even in “normal” times we usually take all the things that we have for granted.

I remember a time when I got a knee injury from roller-blading. I couldn’t walk for several weeks, and then had to do physiotherapy for several months. It was awful, especially for someone who was as active as I was. You then learn to appreciate the small things, like walking. Did you ever find yourself appreciating the simple fact that you can walk? I know that I did. The only problem is that once you get back walking, you quickly forget how grateful you should be for that and take it for granted. So let’s fix all of that right now.

Every day, when you start your day, write down 10 things that you are grateful for. It can be anything at all. The amazing mother that you have, or the delicious cup of coffee you’re drinking. The important thing is to feel how grateful you are for that. If, for some reason, you don’t understand what you should be grateful about, remind yourself that there are people in a much worse situation than you’re in right now. There always are. If you can read this text then it already means you have things to be grateful for.

Remember that in order to feel happy and positive you need not only to perform these exercises, but to involve feelings in them. Take a moment to appreciate each of the 10 things you’re grateful for, while you’re writing them. Don’t just make a list for the sake of making a list.

And as with the positive affirmations, if you realize you’re feeling bad during the day, remind yourself what you’re grateful for, and immerse yourself in that feeling of gratitude. Also, if you want to make sure you stay happy and positive, be sure to practice gratitude even when you feel good.

Method #4 – Accomplish Tasks

One of the worst things that you can do when you’re in some sort of depression is not to do anything, because you “don’t feel like it”. If you were wondering how to become happy and positive, then I have to tell you very clearly – it requires constant action. Action of both your mind and body. If you don’t do anything, you just get into a deeper state of depression, because now you’re not even accomplishing anything.

Have you ever told yourself that you’re in such a bad mood that you just want to watch a movie or listen to some (probably depressing) music? Did it help you feel better? I’m betting that it didn’t. One of the ways to start feeling better about things is to start to accomplish tasks. It could be simple tasks, but they should be accomplished. The positive feeling of accomplishment and progress will do you good.

Don’t wait for your feelings to “get better” before you start doing something. It works exactly in the opposite direction – doing things will make you feel better. If you just wait and do nothing, not only will you not feel better, you may even feel worse, and some tasks you need or wanted to do will start piling up and stress you.

Even small progress is progress. Make sure you can show progress every day and it will make you feel happy and positive.

Method #5 – Get Out More

People who are depressed tend to want to crawl into a corner and hide, and definitely not see anyone or go outside. But the truth is, this gets them into an even worse situation. We, as human beings, need to be around people to really be happy and feel alive. Even if your situation is really good you won’t feel completely happy without the presence of other people in your life.

Furthermore, being in the open air and changing the scenery that we constantly see has a positive effect on our mind. It helps us to see that there’s life and happiness out there, and that the world has not ended. Seeing people laughing and enjoying life has a positive effect on us, even if your first instinct is to think that it will only make you feel bad, because “you don’t have all of that”.

Additionally, physical exercises are good for getting the stress out of your body. Whether you actually want to go to the gym, or you’re just having a long walk around the city (try to walk around beautiful places and parks), the physical exercise will do you good by releasing the tension in your body and filling your soul with positivity.

So go out more, especially to places you can have fun in. And engage in fun activities, even if you “don’t feel like it”. The activities will make you feel better. Try to remember the times in which you didn’t feel like going somewhere, but then went there (possibly persuaded by one of your friends), and ended up having a lot of fun and being really happy that you decided to go. You’re in the same situation right now.
